Duffy - U.K. enters 'Patagonia' for Oscars

BAFTA selects Welsh-Spanish lingo pic
By Adam Dawtrey
"Patagonia"

The Welsh / Spanish language "Patagonia" is the U.K.'s submission for the foreign-language Oscar, joining the 60-plus other entries submitted by their countries and reported by Variety since last August.
"Patagonia," from Welsh director Marc Evans, was chosen by BAFTA's film committee. The organisation only enters a film for the foreign-language Oscar race when it considers it is a contender with a realistic chance of a nomination. The last film it put forward was "Afghan Star" in 2009. The U.K. has submitted nine films in the past 20 years, seven of them Welsh.
A complete list of the 63 entries this year is available at variety.com. The 84th Academy Awards will be held Feb. 26 at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.
"Patagonia," with dialogue in Welsh and Spanish, stars Matthew Rhys and pop star Duffy in the story of two parallel journeys, one by a Welsh couple who take a trip to Argentina to work on their relationship, and another by an elderly Patagonian woman and her nephew who travel to Wales in search of their family roots.
"Hedd Wynn" in 1993 and "Solomon and Gaenor" in 1999, received Oscar nominations, but the U.K. has never won the award. "Patagonia" premiered at the Seattle Film Festival in 2010, and subsequently played at several other fests, before getting a small U.K. theatrical release this March.

Prince Harry became a record breaker on the day when he carried out the largest foreign currency trade ever – worth £15.5bn.
He took to the telephone to complete the deal between Barclays London and a European counter-party based on projected currency values between September 13 and 14.

Also taking part in the day were Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice, the Cheeky Girls, television presenter Tess Daly, DJs Chris Evans, Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood, actor Ray Winstone, London mayor Boris Johnson and Sir Terry Wogan.

Duffy and the others were at the Canary Wharf offices of BGC Partners on behalf of Sentebale, the charity Prince Harry helped to found in order to support vulnerable children and orphans in the southern African country of Lesotho.

The annual fundraising day was started in memory of the 658 staff who worked for the firm’s sister company, investment bank Cantor Fitzgerald, who died in the 9/11 terror attacks Cantor Fitzgerald lost more people than any other organisation caught up in the atrocity 10 years ago.

Duffy counter-sues Angela Becker

BBC On-Line Wales
19 July 2011 Last updated at 19:00

Duffy to counter-sue ex-manager Angela Becker
Duffy's lawyers said she would be defending the action.

Singer Duffy is to counter-sue her former manager, who claims she is owed outstanding payments of up to £200,000.
Angela Becker, who has previously managed Madonna, is suing the Welsh singer in the High Court claiming a breach of a management agreement.
She is demanding 20% of Duffy's gross earnings during the time her second album "Endlessly" was launched.
Lawyers acting for the Welsh musician said she would defend the action and would issue a counter-claim.
The 27-year-old from Nefyn, Gwynedd, whose full name is Aimée Ann Duffy, terminated her business relationship with Ms Becker in December.
Papers filed at the Royal Courts of Justice by solicitors acting for Ms Becker claim she had a "binding oral agreement" with Duffy.
She began acting for the star in March 2010 after the singer parted with her former manager Jeanette Lee.

It is apparent no written contract was signed.

It is alleged that Ms Becker was to handle the Grammy-winning singer's business activities until the end of the promotion of the new album or alternatively four months after its initial release.
The services included managing Duffy's diary and promotion schedule, liaising with her record company and arranging recording sessions.
Ms Becker is now managing the Pet Shop Boys.
The court documents show that the claim is for less than £200,000 and includes over £5,600 of expenses incurred.
David Griffiths, a partner with Clintons, a law firm that specialises in entertainment and media litigation, confirmed it had been instructed by Duffy.
"She will be defending this action and will be entering a counter-claim," he said.
No date for a court hearing has been set.

Duffy Sued For £200,000

Rain On Her Parade: Duffy's ex-manager sues singer for £200,000, but there's no contract
By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 3:45 PM on 17th July 2011
Duffy is being sued by her former manager for £200,000 - despite there being no contract to breach.
Angela Becker has taken the case to court in an attempt to secure outstanding royalties she claims she has not received.
But the Rain On Your Parade singer has not signed on the dotted line and therefore is not legally bound to forfeit her money.
Becker, who used to manage Madonna, took control of the 27-year-old's business ventures in March 2010.
While the pair failed to put pen to paper to mark their working relationship, Becker says their partnership was due to last until promotion of Duffy's second album Endlessly, released last year, had been completed.
But in December, the Grammy-winner said she wanted to terminate their agreement.

Becker and Duffy were both unavailable for comment last night

Duffy and Mike Phillips Officially "Over"

Duffy and Mike Phillips have officially ended their romance “once and for all”, we can reveal. Despite feverish speculation that they had split earlier this month, we understand they finally decided to call it quits in the last week. Strain had been put on the relationship by the uncertainty about where the Wales international scrum-half will be playing his rugby next season – which is still unresolved.

A source close to the couple said: “They have officially ended.
“It is a very unfortunate and sad situation but things had been deteriorating for quite a few months.”
The source added arguments had been getting more frequent and now though said to be on good terms, they have split. “The arguments were increasing as the uncertainty surrounding Mike’s career increased.

“They tried to reconcile things on several occasions and were both keen to make it work but it is now over once and for all. “It’s all very amicable. It is just unfortunate the way things didn’t work out. “They both would have liked it too, it just wasn’t meant to be. “He doesn’t know where he is going to be playing – he has never had this in his career.  “You can’t really plan a life together.”

Duffy meeting the Queen at Buckingham Palace May 9 2011

Duffy meets The Queen at Buckingham Palace

WELSH singing sensation Duffy was a special guest of the Queen as Buckingham Palace held its first event since the royal wedding.
The Mercy singer joined fellow pop star Ellie Goulding and comedian Michael McIntyre in the palace’s White Room which last hosted the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding reception.
Duffy, whose real name is Aimee Ann Duffy, joined the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh for a production of another celebrated love story, Romeo and Juliet.
The palace’s 450 guests were treated to a modern interpretation of the Shakespeare work, told through street dance and rap performed by some of the UK’s hottest new acts.
Monday night’s 30-minute show, directed by the English National Ballet, opened with Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture before the English National Ballet then followed with a piece to Prokofiev’s The Dance of the Knights.
Grammy award-winning artist Duffy, from Nefyn, on the Llyn Peninsula, rose to fame following the success of her first album Rockferry.
Last year she made her acting debut in the Marc Evans’ touching drama, Patagonia, which was inspired by the 19th century exodus of Welsh farmers and miners from poverty in England to new hope in Argentina.
Despite receiving mixed reviews for her second studio album, Endlessly, the 26-year-old has seen her stock continue to rise.
Only recently was she invited to 10 Downing Street for the launch of Save the Children’s No Child Born to Die initiative.
Yet in a Western Mail interview earlier this year, Duffy insisted that despite travelling the world and meeting famous people, she was still the “same girl” who grew up in the small seaside village of Nefyn, with her twin sister Katy and older sister Kelly.
“I guess my life is a lot more glamorous than it used to be in terms of the things I wear, the places I go, the places I stay, the places I eat at and the people I meet,” she said.
“Everything is just wonderful, it’s really fantastic – but I don’t get too caught up in it.”

Duffy and Mike Phillips splitting?

Duffy calls it quits with Mike Phillips
by Dean Piper, Sunday Mirror 8/05/2011

Welsh warbler Duffy has been having a tough old time in her relationship with rugby player Mike Phillips over the past few weeks.
They were splitting, then they weren’t and now word reaches me they have parted – this time for good.
A pal of the 25-year-old star says: “Mike wasn’t sure he wanted a full-blown committed relationship. Whereas Duffy was actually up for something more proper.”
Chin up, Duffs...
